Greet before doing business
In Bahamian culture, acknowledging someone with a greeting before making a request or transaction is basic courtesy. 'Good morning' or 'Good afternoon' first, then your question or request.
Don't be condescending
Bahamians have a sophisticated, educated culture and are well-traveled. Talking down to locals or treating them as purely service staff rather than people is noticed and resented.
Cover up off the beach
Bahamians are modest and conservative in their dress outside of beach settings. Swimwear and beachwear are perfectly appropriate at the beach or pool, but wearing them in towns, restaurants, shops, or public spaces is considered disrespectful. Pack a cover-up or change before heading into town.
Drug offenses carry severe penalties
Drug offenses in the Bahamas carry strict penalties including lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines. Do not attempt to bring any drugs — including marijuana — into or out of the country. Customs enforcement at airports is thorough.

TAP WATER: Nassau/Freeport municipal water is technically potable (reverse osmosis desalinated), but many travelers experience GI upset. Bottled water or treated water is recommended. On outer islands, water supply is often rainwater catchment — boil or treat all water.
Local Pharmacy Rules
Adequate in Nassau and Freeport with major brands available. Stock is limited on Outer Islands. Carry essential prescriptions in original packaging with a copy of the prescription.
