Respect the queue — always
Queuing is a near-sacred institution in British culture. Always wait your turn in line. Jumping a queue — even briefly or accidentally — will cause immediate, intense disapproval (expressed through pointed silence and looks).
Don't be too loud in public
Speaking loudly in restaurants, on public transport, or in quiet public spaces is considered inconsiderate. Moderate your voice — this is especially true on the Tube, where most commuters observe an unwritten rule of silence.
Apologise freely
Saying 'sorry' frequently is completely normal British behaviour — for small inconveniences, when asking for help, even when someone else bumps into you. Join in and say sorry often.
Don't ask personal questions early on
British culture tends toward reserve with people you've just met. Asking strangers about their salary, relationship status, or age is considered intrusive. Let conversations develop naturally.

Citymapper
Citymapper is the gold standard for navigating London's complex public transport network — far better than Google Maps for transit. It integrates the Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line, buses, the DLR, the National Rail, and cycling routes into seamless door-to-door directions. Tells you exactly which carriage to board to be closest to your exit. Also covers Manchester and Birmingham.
Uber
Uber operates throughout the UK, particularly in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Your existing U.S. account works seamlessly. Fares are in British pounds (GBP). Uber is a good alternative to black cabs (which are excellent but expensive) and useful when the Tube isn't running. Note that in London, Bolt often has lower surge pricing — worth having both installed.
Bolt
Bolt is Uber's biggest rival in the UK and is widely used in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, and many smaller cities. It's often noticeably cheaper than Uber — especially during surge hours, late nights, and weekends — while working almost identically. Worth having installed alongside Uber so you can price-check both before every ride.
