Greet people warmly
Jamaicans are warm and expressive — greeting people you interact with (market vendors, taxi drivers, restaurant staff) with genuine warmth rather than treating them transactionally makes an enormous difference to your experience.
Don't mock or imitate the accent or patois
Attempting to imitate Jamaican Patois as a joke or novelty is considered disrespectful. Genuine attempts to learn and use phrases are appreciated — performative imitation is not.
Respect is fundamental
In Jamaican culture, showing respect — particularly to elders — is deeply important. Acknowledging people as you pass, using 'please' and 'thank you,' and not speaking condescendingly go a long way.
Avoid local route taxis and minibuses
Route taxis (shared cars) and minibuses are used by locals for budget travel but are not recommended for tourists — they are unregulated, sometimes dangerously overcrowded, and routes can be confusing.
